About this winei

A little bit about Tahbilk 'Old Vines' Cabernet Shiraz releases ...
The quintessentially Australian blending of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz saw initial releases at Tahbilk from the 1957 and 1958 vintages under Eric Purbrick’s tutelage, believed to be the first such ‘Estate Grown’ blends in Australia.
It was not until 14 years later that Eric’s son John resurrected the blend that saw four vintages released in the 1970s and a further two in the 1980s.
The Estate is blessed with significant older vineyard blocks with, among others, Shiraz dating back to 1860 and 1933, and Cabernet Sauvignon to 1949.
It is selected of these aged vine plantings that are the primary source for the ‘OId Vines’ Cabernet Shiraz when, from the 2010 vintage, the blend returned and is now a permanent fixture of Tahbilk’s premium Reds portfolio. With a contributing average vine age of over 35 years they set a new standard for such releases from the Estate.

Tasting Notei

Enjoy Now to 2032/2035
Drawing on the marriage of Tahbilk’s older vine plantings and a stellar vintage the winemaking team have crafted a red with a wonderful depth of character.
Aromas and flavours of Asian five spice and floral hints alongside generous dark and red berry fruits are graced by well-integrated cedary oak and fine but assertive tannins.
Delicious current drinking … additional complexity will come with judicious cellaring.

Don't Just Take Our Word For It ...

"Shows plenty of Tahbilk personality: relaxed and confident, no show-off.
It's all about keeping true to an evergreen house style. Emphasises warm, ripe, sweet blackberried fruit and baking spices, earth, briar, chocolate and gentle woodsy oak against a firm tannin background. Has further cellaring age on its mind."

Vintage Notesi

VINTAGE 2020
There are few Australians who will forget the 2019/2020 summer as bushfires burnt across the Eastern seaboard after a dry winter and spring. Thankfully there were no fires in central Victoria, and although it was smoky at times in Nagambie Lakes, Tahbilk fruit was not affected by smoke taint.
The dry winter and spring had our vineyard staff diligently monitoring soil moisture and irrigating when necessary. January and February saw temperatures fluctuating from blazing hot 40 degrees plus days to very mild 20-degree days.
Initially the very hot days seemed to slow the ripening but, similar to recent vintages, we commenced picking in early February.
The unforgiving season continued through harvest, with tropical storms resulting in weekly rainfall that, whilst irritating to the Vineyard and Winery crews, was not enough to significantly impact yields or initiate disease.
All varieties came in with excellent colour and flavour and 2020 is noted as a vintage of very good whites and terrific reds – not unusual for a dry season
