Honouring ANZAC Day at Tahbilk Estate: A Special Commemorative Display
ANZAC Day is a time of remembrance, a moment to honour those who have served and sacrificed for our nation. This year, we invite you to experience a deeply moving commemorative display presented by Tahbilk Head Gardener Travis McCarty. This special tribute will be showcased in the historic Len Evans Museum at Tahbilk Estate on ANZAC Day, Friday, 25th April. The exhibition will run from Friday 18th to the 30th April from 10-5pm.
A Tribute to Service and Sacrifice
The display represents the many divisions of war service, recognising the contributions of the Royal Australian Air Force (R.A.A.F), the Army, the Navy (R.A.N), Australian Nurses, and the countless animals that played vital roles in the war effort.
Among these remarkable stories is that of Gunner, a six-month-old stray Kelpie who became an unexpected hero. Injured during an air raid, Gunner developed an extraordinary ability to detect incoming enemy aircraft before human ears could hear them. His keen senses provided crucial warnings to Allied forces in Darwin during the Second World War, saving many lives and earning him a place in military history.
Celebrating the Legacy of Percy Westcott
This display is enriched with photographs and historical accounts of Leading Aircraftman Percy Westcott, Gunner’s devoted master. We are honoured to share his story and recognise his incredible legacy.
Featuring the Story of Gunner the Kelpie
With the blessing of author Kathryn Berryman, a published book titled Gunner has been included in the display. This beautifully illustrated hardcover picture book, brought to life by artist Susan Boyle, captures the true story of Gunner the Kelpie and his remarkable wartime service.
For those wishing to take home this inspiring tale, copies of Gunner are available for purchase. Click the link below to secure your copy:
Additionally, we invite you to listen to Gunner the War Dog Story, read by Percy Westcott’s granddaughter, a heartfelt tribute to one of the war’s most loyal and courageous companions.
