Selected from the best of the best that we produce at Tahbilk Estate, the 2018 Eric Stevens Purbrick delivers a truly sublime 'best of vintage' release. Rich, black-currant and dark fruits, eucalypt notes and earthy, gamey characters immediately engage on the nose and palate where Asian five spice and savoury hints add further complexity.

    About this winei

It is difficult to talk about the "Eric Stevens Purbrick" reds without talking about the man and the history behind them.
Founded in 1860 by a group of Melbourne businessmen (including John Pinney Bear), by 1925 Tahbilk was solely in the Bear family's hands. For a number of reasons beyond their control, the fortunes of the Estate at that time were in decline.

Enter my family: great-grandfather Reginald Purbrick purchased Tahbilk from the Bear family with a plan to subdivide into dairy farms. Fortuitously he was convinced by grandfather Eric to continue operating Tahbilk as a winery. Eric was then handed the reins in 1931, a role that continued for over 45 vintages prior to handing the role to myself after the 1978 vintage. Eric remained a strong influence on the direction of Tahbilk until his passing in 1991.

One of the first to place his faith in the future of Australian table wines, Eric was at the forefront of varietal labelling in Australia ; but perhaps his greatest legacy was to create the 'Special Bin' range of reds, beginning with a Shiraz in 1948. Selected from the most outstanding casks produced on the Estate from a particular vintage, these wines became known as 'Reserve' in 1985. From 2002 they fittingly carry his name and signature: 'Eric Stevens Purbrick'.
And so, a new legacy with its roots firmly planted in the history of the Estate was born.

    2018 Vintage
The 2018 growing season was dry and warm and perfect for growing premium wine grapes.
The winter of 2017 started with a very dry June and below average rains in July and August. Spring continued the theme with less than half the average long term rainfall, and finished with an unseasonably warm November. The vines loved the favourable weather, growing large, healthy canopies and setting good bunch numbers – ideal for optimal yields. Vineyard operations focused on trimming to maintain a balanced canopy, and irrigation to ensurethe vines had adequate water and nutrients. Vintage started early February and progressed very smoothly and although it remained warm, cooler nights kept a lid on sugar accumulation so that ripening progression was close to perfect.
2018 lived up to its promise of being a very good year ... the whites have clear varietal definition and crisp fruit flavours, and the reds are bright and varietal, with concentration and depth.

Don't Just Take Our Word For It ...

"Some years it's the Eric Stevens Purbrick Shiraz that shines the brightest, and some years it is the Eric Stevens Purbrick Cabernet.
The 2018 vintage was such a year for Cabernet, producing impressive depth of flavour, concentration and above all, elegance. Leafy, black fruit, clove, anise and sweet earth scents. Boasts depth, length and firm line as fine tannins guide the palate, embracing intense fruit, spice and a touch of cigar box complexity."
