ESP Shiraz - 2013

2013 'Eric Stevens Purbrick' Shiraz

13.5% Alcohol ~ Screw Cap Closure ~ Enjoy Now to 2033/2038

Named in honour of my father Eric, who began releasing the ‘best of a vintage’ Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon in the late 1940s as Special Bin, that then morphed into ‘Reserve’ in the 1980s and now ‘Eric Stevens Purbrick’, Andrew Calliard MW eloquently described them in an Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine issue this year as “encapsulating the idea that fine wine is living history, built on the efforts of previous generations. Such wines go beyond the ephemeral experience and the single vintage. Beauty is fleeting yet greatness is tangible and lasting. You can taste a character of place and feel the voices of the past. These impressive and beautifully crafted wines are wonderful expressions of Australian terroir.”
We consider the 2013 vintages of each to be thus so and I absolutely commend them to you.

“The colour is deep, the wine medium to full-bodied, with fruit ranging through red to purple to black; the tannins are ripe and supple, oak\ contributing a little more than usual, but not egregiously so.”

Established in 1860, Tahbilk was purchased by my grandfather Reginald Purbrick in 1925 with his son, and my father, Eric taking on management of the Estate in 1931.
Heading the winemaking for over 40 vintages until handing over to my son Alister in 1978, Eric was one of the early pioneers of varietal labelling in Australia and continued to be a strong influence in the direction of the Estate until his passing in 1991.
Perhaps his greatest contribution to Tahbilk was to create the ‘Special Bin’ Shiraz in 1948 which was to be made, and continues to be made, from the best vat of a particular vintage. In 1952 a ‘Special Bin’ Cabernet Sauvignon was added to the range with both releases becoming known as ‘Reserve’ in 1985.
In recognition of his achievements, these ‘best of a vintage’ wines now carry his name and signature … Eric Stevens Purbrick.
