1860 Vines Shiraz - 2013

2013 '1860 Vines' Shiraz

12.5% Alcohol ~ Screw Cap Closure ~ Enjoy Now to 2033/2038

You cannot have a release from vines that are now 157 years old as is the case with our ‘1860 Vines’, and not be of the belief that what you are able to put into the bottle is not indeed liquid history. The undeniable truth that the wine released is more than worthy of its iconic status in the vinous world is almost superfluous (but gloriously not!) to the fact of the age of the vines that produced it and that those vines are un-grafted original European Shiraz rootstocks that survived the decimation by the vine louse Phylloxera in the late 1800s.
“It’s probably more around its authenticity and the rarity. It’s not always our highest pointed wine, it's very much dependent on the year. The importance of it is more around what it represents.”
Alister Purbrick ~ Old Vine Take A Look At My Life – WBM Australia’s Wine Business Magazine
Deliciously for us all, Tahbilk 2013 ‘1860 Vines’ Shiraz is from a very good year and is highly pointed!

“Lighter colour than usual, but has an excellent clear crimson hue; the winemaking team has resisted the temptation to extract more fruit and
tannins, letting the purity of the fruit light up the room, red cherry to the fore. The silky tannins and overall weight are akin to a high quality pinot noir, so it's no surprise I should love it even if others may not.”
James Halliday ~ Halliday 2018 Wine Companion ~ www.winecompanion.com.au

As original as the Estate itself, these un-grafted, pre-phylloxera Shiraz plantings are amongst the oldest in the world and were nominated by renowned USA Wine & Spirits magazine as one of the 25 Great Vineyards of the World. The vineyards selected were those where the terroir – the total environment of a place, including soil, climate, aspect, vine and even history “is most clearly perceptible in the wine.”
Listed as Excellent in Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine VI as being a ‘high performing wine of exquisite quality’, since the inaugural 1979 vintage Tahbilk ‘1860 Vines’ Shiraz releases have become most sought after and collectable, cementing their place as being an authentic piece of liquid history.
